I have pasted the Kelis 4th of July lyrics below. I am not sure if there is any secret message to it. It sounds like any kind of sad love song. She is comparing the way she feels to the excitement and “fireworks” of the 4th of July, that's all. Didn't think I needed you Never seemed to Now I'm living proof And now I'm brand new Rename me Baby, you can claim me I've been changed, see You make me over You make me over Didn't think I needed you Never seemed to Now I'm living proof (living proof) Nothing I'll ever say or do will be as good as loving you You make me high You make me high (And I don't wanna come down) Didn't think I needed you Never seemed to Now I'm living proof And now I'm brand new Rename me Baby, you can claim me I've been changed, see You make me over You make me over Didn't think I needed you Never seemed to Now I'm living proof (living proof) Nothing I'll ever say or do will be as good as loving you You make me high You make me high (And I don't wanna come down) You make me Just like the sky Like the 4th of July

Since you already have the Kelis 4th of July lyrics there, I will try to give you my take on what they mean. I think that most of the time, if you don't understand the meaning of the song or if you don't understand all of the lyrics, it can really help to watch the music video. Of course this is not always true, since many music videos are random or have strange concepts that don't make the song easier to interpret. However, I think with this song the music video does help bring the message of the lyrics across pretty clearly if you didn't quite understand them before. The music video starts out with Kelis walking in the desert. At times she is dressed in a big white fur coat, in the desert, which I think is actually just a visual concept instead of one that goes with the lyrics exactly. But the part where she is in front of that big red laser ball and the part where she is in a clear glass box with fire, kind of like hell, you get the idea of the heat of the love which also turns into kind of torture and entrapment. The microphone she sings into later is front of a weird orange light, which is kind of the same concept as the artificial light from the laser. The fact that she went from being inside a glass box of fire and then is in a pool of water may mean that she is hot and cold with the person she's talking about. Towards the end of the video, Kelis is just kind of dancing around with fireworks and so on, which I think they needed to add because the song is called 4th of July (Fireworks) but also because fireworks are almost always a metaphor for the special and spectacular feeling and celebration of being in love.
